About the Artist
Mathew Joseph Zachariah is a contemporary artist and poet based in Memphis Tennessee.
He is known for his post-industrial plastic recycled art as well as a plastic recycling entrepreneur for over 30 years. Mathew would describe his art as impressionistic, modern-day pointillism with countless tiny pieces of plastic used as a visual language. Plastic scrap such as green trash cans, red taillights and blue office water jugs ground up and placed on a canvas. The pure and vibrant colors that were once waste now birth a scene of expression personal to the eyes of the viewer. The story of the piece is not only fulfilled through its composition, but also through existing outside of the landfill.
The theme of Mathews’ works is based on multiple concepts: Nature intwined with the human condition, scenes of reflection, regret and redemption, as well as the surreal adaptation of conflict. Mathews’ unique story is the personal relationship he has with the plastic. The process of curation, decontamination and finally the plastics granulation into pieces. The ultimate beauty is the birth of a story displayed on a canvas conveyed by repurposed plastic that was originally condemned. All this coincided with a subject that represented emotional exploration through form, color, composition, and texture.
